TECHNIQUES

This section is all about my techniques, how I work, where I get my inspirations from and what tools I prefer to use.

Digital painting

Everything starts with an idea that is mostly born while living through my everyday life. In most cases my first steps are some raw sketches on a piece of paper or in a simple sketch application on my Android phone (I used various sketch applications on my previous Windows Mobile smartphones or my NintendoDS before).

When the raw idea is captured in one or various sketches, I'm starting to paint the various parts and/or the whole picture. I'm doing this using a wide range of software like Photoshop, Painter, Timanthes, Illustrator, etc. and the graphics tablet and a mouse.

On the right you can see some raw steps of the creation process of one of my digital paintings. As you can see I started this one with basic sketches on a separate layer and continued painting the parts of the image in separate layers until the whole picture was finished. As you can see I don't use any 3D software for doing the faces, scenes, poses, etc. and I'm quite proud of it.

For making it easier to change the size/orientation/composition of the picture most parts remain in separate layers until the painting is finished.

I started to do digital paintings a long time ago on the good old Commodore 64, switched to the Commodore Amiga shortly after it's release and lateron started to do graphics on PC systems. I'm a autodidact concerning graphics and my painting style is heavily influenced by the various computer systems I went through. Therefore quite often have different approaches to achieving my targets. Contrary to other digital artists I'm painting directly in the desired target resolution.

A lot of other artists consider their methods to be the better ones and they also rate my use of the "smear" function to smooth the colors and lights as "evil". Well. That's just a matter of taste and it is honestly more important for me to keep my style and I also love the massive amount of positive feedback I'm receiving after competitions or through my website.
